Beeswax Candles: Are They Really Worth It?
If you’ve ever looked into natural candles, you’ve probably seen beeswax candles mentioned as a premium, eco-friendly option. Their warm golden colour and sweet, natural scent have made them popular in wellness spaces and rustic interiors. They sound natural and traditional — but are beeswax candles really worth it for your home? Let’s explore what makes them different, and why we at Phlame choose a different path.
What Is Beeswax?
Beeswax is a naturally occurring wax produced by honeybees as they construct and maintain their hives. It’s harvested as a by-product of honey production and often comes in little pellets or golden slabs. Candles made from beeswax are known for their long burn time, warm glow and subtle honey-like scent - even without added fragrance.

The Pros of Beeswax Candles
-
Clean and long burning – Beeswax has a high melting point, so it lasts longer than many other waxes
-
Naturally scented – It carries a mild, comforting honey aroma
-
Eco-friendly – It’s biodegradable and doesn’t need synthetic additives
-
Minimalist beauty – It has a rustic, creamy look that suits some interiors
But... Why We Don’t Use Beeswax at Phlame
While beeswax has its charm, it’s not always the right choice - especially when your goal is to create a refined, elegant and modern interior atmosphere.
Here’s why we’ve chosen not to use beeswax in our candles (at least for now):
1. Scent Freedom Matters
Beeswax has a natural smell that can interfere with the luxurious fragrances we carefully design. At Phlame, we use premium perfume oils to create complex, beautiful scents - from soft florals to rich woods - and we want those notes to shine through without distraction.
2. Style and Colour Flexibility
Beeswax naturally comes in warm yellow or golden tones, which can make it harder to achieve certain colours or design finishes. We work with smooth, neutral waxes like soy and olive, which allow us to create the clean, modern look our customers love - whether it’s for a minimalist home or a boutique-style interior.
3. Bee Welfare and Sustainability
Although beeswax is natural, its production still depends on animal labour. We respect and admire nature - and while beeswax can be harvested responsibly, we’ve made the choice to focus on plant-based waxes that are fully vegan and leave a smaller ecological footprint.
What We Use Instead
We work primarily with soy wax and olive wax. These plant-based waxes are:
-
Clean burning and long-lasting
-
Neutral in scent, allowing fragrance oils to shine
-
Smooth in appearance, perfect for sculptural and container candles
-
100% vegan and cruelty-free
Together with our custom fragrance blends, they allow us to create candles that feel luxurious, modern and deeply personal.
Final Thoughts
Beeswax candles definitely have a place in the world - they’re warm, nostalgic and natural. But at Phlame, our mission is different. We craft candles that are clean, stylish, bold in scent and beautiful in any space. That’s why we’ve chosen waxes that let us create without limits - and that align with our values of sustainability, creativity and design.
